El núcleo de la banda se formó a finales de 1960 como Ivan Jay and the Jaycats. En 1966, The Jaybirds se mudó a Londres para respaldar a The Ivy League. En el mismo año, Chick Churchill se unió al grupo como tecladista. Ese noviembre, el cuarteto contrató a un gerente, Chris Wright, y cambió su nombre a Blues Trip. Usando el nombre de Blues Yard tocaron en un show en el Marquee Club apoyando a la Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band. Volvieron a cambiar su nombre, a Diez años después, en honor a Elvis Presley, uno de los ídolos de Lee. (Esto fue diez años después del exitoso año de Presley, 1956).
