El núcleo de la banda se formó a finales de 1960 como Ivan Jay and the Jaycats. Después de varios años de éxito local en el área de Nottingham / Mansfield, conocida desde 1962 como Jaybirds y más tarde como Ivan Jay y Jaymen, Alvin Lee y Leo Lyons fundaron Diez años después. En 1966, The Jaybirds se mudó a Londres para respaldar a The Ivy League. En el mismo año, Chick Churchill se unió al grupo como tecladista. Ese noviembre, el cuarteto contrató a un gerente, Chris Wright, y cambió su nombre a Blues Trip. Usando el nombre de Blues Yard tocaron en un show en el Marquee Club apoyando a la Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band.
