The Sound of Surprise es un álbum de Earthworks de Bill Bruford. Fue el primer álbum de Earthworks que contó con el saxofonista Patrick Clahar, el pianista Steve Hamilton y el bajista acústico Mark Hodgson. A diferencia de los álbumes anteriores de Earthworks, muestra un sonido de cuarteto de jazz acústico más tradicional. Fue lanzado en el sello Discipline Global Mobile de Robert Fripp en 2001.
