Desde finales de febrero hasta principios de marzo, Anderson grabó un nuevo álbum en solitario, Thick As A Brick 2.

 Desde mediados de octubre hasta principios de diciembre, Ian continuó grabando el álbum en solitario "Thick As A Brick 2". 

Del 10 al 22 de diciembre, se realizaron conciertos tradicionales en solitario de "Ian Anderson Plays the Christmas Jethro Tull".

2011.12.19 - Ian Anderson - Manchester Cathedral

El 31 de julio, Martin Barre tocó su último concierto con la banda. Y en noviembre, dio una entrevista en la que declaró que dejaría a Jethro Tull durante al menos dos años. En 2012, realizó una gira con una nueva banda llamada "New Day", que es interpretada por otro ex miembro de Jethro Tull, Jonathan Noyce. Y en 2013 lanzó su álbum en solitario "Away with Words".

El 7 de julio, Ian recibió el título de Doctor Honorario (Doctor en Filología) en la Universidad de Abertay en la ciudad escocesa de Dundee (Abertay, Dundee).

El 2 de mayo habría cumplido 60 años para John Glascock, el bajista de la banda que murió en 1979 (1975-1979).

El 15 de julio se cumple el 40 aniversario de Jonathan Noyce, el ex bajista de la banda (1994-2006).

This was indeed a very interesting filming as the show was recorded at the Maltings in
Farnham in the early evening and was actually broadcast that same
evening around 11pm. There is very little on film that includes the
brass section of Reg Brooks and the late Martyn Shields and so it was a
time when the ERE was going through quite a metamorphism with a new
guitar player as well in John “Dusty” Dunsterville, who was a very funny
guy in many respects and his rendition, (and altered lyrics), of the
Johnny Cash classic, “I Walk The Line” was a regular occurrence on stage
and indeed appears toward the end of this concert too!

This was a strange era for me. Concept albums and prog rock were at possibly their lowest ebbs and there was I having just recorded a massive concept
album, co-written with Tim Rice, and followed it up with a huge prog
rock concert at Hammersmith Odeon…..err…..no points Wakeman!

Truth was I just wanted to do what I felt I was best at and not tow the fashion line musically.

It was a very difficult time in my life. I had lost my father a few
months earlier, my 2nd marriage was on the rocks and musically I had no
idea what was likely to happen to me in the coming months or years and
to top it all, the band proved to be one of the few very unhappy
line-ups that I had ever put together, although it has to be said that
this concert was certainly a highlight.
