Como lo indica su nombre, Alan Parsons Project no era una banda sino un concepto supervisado por el titular Parsons, un exitoso productor e ingeniero. Nacido en Gran Bretaña el 20 de diciembre de 1948, comenzó su carrera musical como ingeniero de planta en EMI Studios y obtuvo por primera vez una exposición significativa en la industria a través de su trabajo en la obra maestra de 1969 de los Beatles, Abbey Road. Parsons posteriormente trabajó con Paul McCartney en varios de los primeros álbumes de Wings; también supervisó grabaciones de Al Stewart, Cockney Rebel y Pilot, pero solidificó su reputación trabajando en Dark Side of the Moon de Pink Floyd.
Influenciado por su trabajo en el álbum conceptual de Stewart, Time Passages, Parsons decidió comenzar a crear sus propios discos temáticos; junto con el compositor Eric Woolfson, pronto fundó el Proyecto Alan Parsons. Aunque Parsons tocaba teclados y cantaba con poca frecuencia en sus discos, el Proyecto fue diseñado principalmente como un foro para una colección giratoria de vocalistas y músicos de sesión, entre ellos Arthur Brown, el ex-Zombie Colin Blunstone, Steve Harley de Cockney Rebel, Allan de los Hollies Clarke y el guitarrista Ian Bairnson, para interpretar e interpretar la música de Parsons y Woolfson, conceptualmente vinculada y exuberantemente sintetizada.
