Antes de Spooky Tooth, cuatro de los cinco miembros fundadores de la banda habían actuado en la banda Art (antes conocida como The V.I.P.'s). Ridley se unió a Humble Pie en 1969 y fue reemplazado por Andy Leigh para el álbum Ceremony (diciembre de 1969). Wright dejó la banda tras el lanzamiento del álbum. Harrison, Grosvenor y Kellie se quedaron y grabaron The Last Puff (julio de 1970) con miembros de Grease Band de Joe Cocker (guitarrista Henry McCullough, tecladista Chris Stainton y bajista Alan Spenner).

En el otoño de 1970 la banda se embarcó en una gira europea que se realizó con una formación de Harrison, Grosvenor, Kellie, el tecladista John Hawken (ex-Nashville Teens) y el bajista Steve Thompson. Después de esto, el grupo se disolvió, aunque Harrison y Wright reformaron Spooky Tooth en septiembre de 1972 con una formación diferente.

You Broke My Heart So I Busted Your Jaw fue el primer álbum de la banda reunida, lanzado en mayo de 1973 por Island Records. El guitarrista fundador Grosvenor no se reincorporó a la banda, ya que se había asociado con Mott The Hoople, adoptando el nombre artístico de Ariel Bender. Grosvenor fue sucedido por Mick Jones, mientras que el baterista fundador Kellie fue reemplazado por Bryson Graham. Las tareas del bajo fueron manejadas por Ian Herbert, luego Chris Stewart.

Para su próximo álbum, Witness (noviembre de 1973), el baterista original Mike Kellie regresó en lugar de Bryson Graham.
